Operations

Business analystThe work. The person. The fit.

Translate operational needs into clear, testable requirements.

01 / START WITH THE WORK

The work behind the job title.

Translate operational needs into clear, testable requirements.

Agree the reporting line, working arrangement, scope and first priorities. This gives candidates a concrete picture of the opportunity and gives interviewers a shared basis for their decision.

02 / LOOK FOR EVIDENCE

Better questions. Better signals.

A USEFUL STARTING POINT

Map a current workflow and write acceptance criteria for one improvement.

Keep the exercise proportionate and tell the candidate what you are assessing. Ask about their reasoning, constraints and alternatives. Record evidence against agreed criteria before the interview panel compares impressions.

03 / JUDGEMENT OVER ASSUMPTIONS

Keep the decision grounded.

Documenting requests should include challenging ambiguous assumptions.

Separate missing evidence from negative evidence. A follow-up question may resolve uncertainty more fairly than an assumption. Keep the same core criteria across candidates while allowing different experiences to demonstrate the capability.

Agree the criteria, the evidence that would satisfy each one, and who owns the final decision. Write down what would change your mind, so a strong first impression cannot quietly replace the criteria.

04 / MAKE THE NEXT STEP CLEAR

A brief worth sharing.

Before starting, capture the role purpose, expected outcomes, rate or salary parameters, working location and interview owners. Confirm how feedback will be collected and who makes the final decision.
